Manuscripts Sought - Special Issue of ASME Journal of Medical ... Manuscripts Sought - Special Issue of ASME Journal of Medical ... Manuscripts Sought for Special Issue of ASME Journal of Medical DevicesThe ASME Journal of Medical Devices is currently accepting papers for a special issue focusing on topics related to the 3D printing of medical devices. Authors who are interested in having their manuscripts included in the special issue, which is scheduled to be published next June, must submit their papers by Jan. 15, 2019.Significant advances have been made during recent years in the field of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. Additive manufacturing has had a particularly notable impact in the area of healthcare, leading to such breakthroughs as the use of 3D printed models for pre-surgical planning and patient education, 3D printing for medical device design, and 3D printing of customized implanted and non-implanted medical devices for patients. One of the most exciting recent advances in the field of medical 3D printing has been bioprinting the 3D printing of human tissues by depositing cells layer-by-layer to grow organs. As promising as it is, however, bioprinting still poses a number of challenges that need to be addressed, including cell mapping and sourcing for organ function, bio-ink recipes, vascularization of bioprinting structures, bioprinter technologies, bioprinting techniques, and characterization of bioprinted structures. Additionally, the manufacturers of 3D printed medical devices must work under strict regulatory guidelines that result in added challenges for producing printing devices that are panzerschrank and effective. The focus of this special issue of Journal of Medical Devices is on novel additive manufacturing methods that are relevant to the 3D printing of medical devices, preclinical testing of 3D printed test devices, and the performance and safety challenges related to long-term durability of implantable 3D printed devices. T he issue will feature papers related to a range of subjects, including orthopedic solutions, surgical instrumentation, prosthetics, dental implants, biocompatible materials, pharmaceutical and drug delivery, bio-ink composition, mechanical and functional characterization of printed structures, and tissue preservation. The editors for this special issue are Kunal Mitra, Ph.D., Florida Institute of Technology, U.S.A., kmitrafit.edu and Prasanna Hariharan, Ph.D., U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Washington, D.C., U.S.A., Prasanna.Hariharanfda.hhs.gov.Manuscripts should be submitted to the ASME Journal of Medical Devices by Jan. 15, 2019, through the ASME Journals Digital Submission Site. Authors who already have an account should log in and select Submit Paper at the bottom of the page. Authors who do not yet have an account should select Submissions and follow the step-by-step instructions. Authors should choose Journal of Medical Devices when they reach the Paper Submittal page, and then select the special issue 3D Printing of Medical Devices. Papers received after the deadline or papers not selected for inclusion in the special issue may be accepted for publication in a regular issue. For more information on the ASME Journal of Medical Devices, visit http//medicaldevices.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/journal.aspx.
